The talk discusses two Para Site exhibitions which have aimed to contribute towards common intellectual spheres across Asian contexts, mediated through exhibition making and contemporary art institutions.
The exhibitions are Afterwork, presented first at Para Site in Hong Kong and subsequently iterated to ILHAM in Kuala Lumpur, an exhibition exploring issues of class, race, labor, and migration in East and South East Asia, departing from the phenomena of migrant domestic workers across these contexts; Soil and Stones, Souls and Songs, presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Manila, Para Site, and Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok, is based on several intertwined lines of tension and narratives found today in the realities, artistic and cultural production, and contemporary thought in the Asian sphere and beyond.
It addresses the seismic forces that have transformed the world over the past decades, with Asia being at the forefront of these changes, where the unleashing of the forces of the global market has modified the forms of production, labour, landscape and environments, as well as wider societal structures across the continent.
