Explore luckandlockets's Instagram Maybe one day I will see this ring in person. When Elizabeth I of England died, she was wearing this #locketring. Of course, it's beautiful -- made of gold, rubies, diamonds, mother of pearl, enamel and pearl. But the best part? When the monogram-fronted locket was opened, two portraits were revealed, resting intimately, face to face inside that secret compartment. One portrait is of Elizabeth. The other is (widely believed to be) of her mother, Anne Boleyn, executed by her father, Henry VIII, when Elizabeth was a young child. It's said that Elizabeth (understandably) never spoke of Anne publicly, so it is especially touching that she wore this secret #portraitring until her dying day. #ultimatering #oneperfectring #chequersring #ElizabethI #AnneBoleyn #nationalportraitgalleryanneboleynportrait #darnleyportrait #tudormonarchy #houseoftudor #16thcentury #renaissancejewelry #renaissancering #portraitminiature #enamelportrait #16thcenturyportrait 1609144465125401964_1185529898

Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, married Lettice Devereux (née Knollys), widow of Walter Devereux, Earl of Essex, at his house in Wanstead, Essex.
The marriage took place in secret and was performed by Humphrey Tindall, Leicester's chaplain,
Amongst the guests at this secret and ceremony were Sir Francis Knollys (father of the bride), Richard Knollys (the bride's brother), Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick (brother of the groom) and the Earl Leicester's friends, the Earl of Pembroke and Lord North.
The marriage was low-key because he Earl had not told Queen Elizabeth I of his relationship with her cousin, Lettice, whom England's monarch dubbed “the she-wolf”. To say Elizabeth was unhappy about the marriage when she found out was an understatement; she was furious.

It was originally of the same horizontal format as two other known versions of this painting. Here we can see the scenes behind the Queen showing, on the left, the English fire ships setting out in clear, calm weather and on the right the Spanish fleet being wrecked off the dark, rocky coast of Scotland or Ireland. Explore tudorhistory1485_1603's Instagram Queen Elizabeth I's birthday: the life and death of Elizabeth, part 18: death of a monarch: Elizabeth's new favourite at court, now that Dudley was gone was surprisingly, the young, Robert Devereux. Robert was the son of Elizabeth's disliked cousin, Laetitia Knollys (on Anne Boleyn's side). One of the reasons, Elizabeth disliked her was as she married Robert Dudley earlier on without Elizabeth's permission. However, Devereux was not Robert's son. Robert Devereux, began to grow arrogant, as his position as the Queen's favourite and began to demand things of her, which she refused. He then, led a poor rebellion against her in Essex. He was imprisoned and executed in 1601. Elizabeth had now ruled for 43 years and was at the ripe old age of 67! But it was clear she was dying, on her deathbed, however, she refused to believe it. She refused to name an heir and left the country in debt of £335,000. She died on 24th March 1603, it was her 45th year ruling, though technically speaking she only reigned 44 years and 1/4. She was 69 when she died. The fact that she didn't name an heir, was rather risky and risked civil war. Katherine Grey's son, could've potentially claimed the English throne, but James VI of Scots had the whole power of Scotland behind him. Elizabeth was the last of the Tudor monarchs and also the last monarch to rule England without Scotland and hence 'the United Kingdom'. James became James I of England and when people talked of Elizabeth and James they said "Elizabeth was King, now James is Queen". This was implying they had almost switched gender roles, this was as Elizabeth was portrayed as a strong and capable ruler, like a man, a King. And because of King James' open homosexual affairs, he was "Queen". Elizabeth's death was mourned across the country and her reign was remembered as a golden age and there was a grand funeral procession. This was the final part of Elizabeth I. #tudors #queenelizabethi #birthday #death #deathofamonarch #queenofengland #kingofengland #jamesviofscotland #jamesiofengland #goldenage #gloriana #goodqueenbess #elizabethi #tudorhistory #tudordynasty #tudordynastyends #tudorrose #henryviii #anneboleyn #england #history 1608203883536407067_4497499259

Explore davidellis01's Instagram Nourishment for the soul: "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" (1939). Bette Davis, Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland.
A tale of Elizabeth I and her tempestuous relationship with the Earl of Essex, Robert Devereux, as seen through the lens of old Hollywood.
Directed by the great Michael Curtiz, and starring the legendary 'Tasmanian Devil', Aussie Errol Flynn - by far my biggest mancrush of the 1930s Hollywood era. I'm happy to say that I now own a copy of this classic.
Davis and Flynn hated each other, and Flynn hated working with Curtiz, lol! Despite the fact that Curtiz directed Flynn's best films. Olivia de Havilland is stunning, as always.
Flynn's private life is notorious, but whatever his off-set antics, he bloody well knew how to command the screen. And that's hard work against the likes of Bette Davis.
