I’m back for real! And I’ve got stuff to say!
I’m sure I’ve addressed it in some way before, but this concept is worth restating: not actively contributing to a problem isn’t enough to make it go away. Maybe you don’t use homophobic or transphobic slurs. Maybe you’ve never harassed or assaulted a woman. Maybe you’ve never been outwardly racist. That’s all fine and good. Really, that should be expected. But abstaining from all that doesn’t make the problem obsolete. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and injustice in the world will not ever go away as long as there are people to enable it. If you don’t directly contribute to these issues but allow the people around you to do so, especially if you have the power or influence to stop them, you’re still in the wrong. Don’t write off dangerous hate as simple politics. Don’t agree to disagree. Don’t enable. For equality to ever thrive, we have to actually speak up and be disruptive. We have to use whatever privileges we may have to defend the people who don’t. Otherwise, these problems will continue to exist and grow as they always have.
