It doesn't look like much, but this is going to be our kickass internet setup for streaming, using a custom modem that's unapproved by Comcast (on the left). This custom modem has 64MB of ram and 16MB of flash memory, compared to its comcast-approved counterpart which has 32MB of ram and 8MB of flash. In previous installations, I've never had to reset this modem once. The internet from this modem then goes in to the shitty aspire PC you see on the right (installed two Ethernet adapters in to the empty PCI slots), which I'm turning in to a pfsense router to filter my data traffic. It will also provide a network-wide vpn so that devices connected to my internet automatically get routed through a VPN, and caching will be setup on the 250GB hard drive inside the PC, so that my frequently visited sites and downloads are cached, reducing my overall bandwidth so I hopefully don't hit that god-awful 1tb data cap Comcast has. The traditional home router you see on top of the PC is going to be the access-point. Its sole purpose is to output a WiFi signal, basically acting like a WiFi card. I'm flashing dd-wrt on to it and letting it do its thing. This way I have a cheap $40/mo internet setup with no $9/mo modem rental fee, a stable modem, tools and features that normally a server engineer would only have access to (thanks to pfsense) and a stable WiFi signal that never drops thanks to the $20 router above. I'll be posting the finished setup after its all complete .
