I am often asked “Have you ever needed to use your self-defense or your Judo skills?” I like to respond “Yup, every day!” This story doesn’t feature fighting off a terrorist or a serial-rapist. But I sure did use the skills that I have practiced over the last 20+ years.⠀
⠀
The setting: I was sitting in an office with a certain team member who knows who I am, what I do, and what our joint project is all about. In comes a second team member who is new in my life. He requests that I talk about myself and my work. Several sentences into my self-description, the one who knows me takes over the conversation, explaining me for me.⠀
⠀
Once upon a time I would have sat there in silence. In the less-remote past, I would have felt angry, but done nothing. A year or two ago, I would have “fought back.” This would have sounded something like: “you just interrupted me and that’s not okay.” Or maybe: “I gather you know better what I was trying to say than me.” Baggage-filled (legitimate) answers, both. They come from that deep, dark place of, “I am sick and tired of people trying to speak for me.”⠀
⠀
The actual response: For the first time, and I attribute this to my finding my power, I was able to manage the interruption from a clean place. I interrupted back and said “I know you mean well, but you just stole the conversation from me and I am not ok with that.” No anger. No blame. No baggage. And no implication that TM1 is a bad person. ⠀
⠀
This is empowerment self-defense in action. Yes, we teach physical skills, hoping that they never need to be put to use and with the awareness that they might. We teach verbal skills, hoping that these become automatic responses to micro-aggressions and at the same time addressing the entire spectrum of boundary disregard. And we teach emotion and self-care skills, believing that everyone has the right to stand up for themselves, protect themselves and demand respect.⠀
⠀
We know that girls lose their “voice” at around age twelve. What I would have given not to have to wait until age fifty-two to feel comfortable enough in my own skin to speak without baggage. Join us in changing this. 1610777070435035104_1584742204

Dorothy Height was a powerhouse who worked tirelessly during the Civil Rights Movement. She was also a champion of women's rights, particularly African American women. As this quote demonstrates, she believed in pushing the envelope for change. "If the time is not ripe, we have to ripen the time."
