💥SWEET vs WHITE POTATOES💥

🐣For years and years, white potatoes have been demonized as "bad" or "worse" than sweet potatoes. The reasons vary but mainly have to do with one of two [misinformed] points.
-
1️⃣Vitamin and Mineral Content - for some reason people think sweet potatoes have more/better nutrients. But, as you can see, that's not the case. They both have a bunch of important nutrients and what one lacks, the other one makes up for.

2️⃣The Glycemic Index (GI) - long story short, people have been led to believe white potatoes GI is worse for you because it's higher and therefore spikes blood sugar more. But under that logic watermelon would be terrible for you as well because watermelons GI is incredibly high, too. Fact is, the GI of a food doesn't tell us how "bad" it is for you. It just tells us how quickly that food can raise blood sugar. That's it. And there's A LOT more to health (calorie content, nutrient makeup, etc) than that.

🐢The take-home point here is white potatoes are NOT worse for you than sweet potatoes. They both have pros and cons and, truthfully, you'll probably be healthier incorporating both into your diet rather than either one alone.

Explore gastifer's Instagram I always talk about how when dieting, it is so important to select high volume foods. This allows you to feel fuller which will hopefully lead to less desire to cheat, and a higher likelihood of you being able to stick to your plan. Here is an internal visual of that concept that I saw posted by @caloriefixes. As you can see, 400 calories of vegetables will fill you up way more than the same amount of calories of meat. Obviously, you can't eat only veggies. But, if you add veggies to each meal, it should allow you to feel fuller and that feeling will decrease your likelihood of feeling the need to cheat on your diet 👍🏼 1519304240437451919_749952543

This comparison by @caloriefixes is pretty crazy. You can basically eat an entire watermelon for the same amount of calories as a smidgen (yes I used the word smidgen) of ice cream. Yes, ice cream tastes better but I actually love watermelon and would take the watermelon over the ice cream in this picture any day. Watermelon is one of the lowest calorie fruits per gram so I always recommend it as a good snack to fill you up with not too many calories. As you can see, even if you manage to binge on it, you can't really eat that many calories of it. And, unlike the comparisons I usually post, the larger portion size is also the healthier one so all of the anti macro people have nothing to get angry about 😁😂. 1519303861691892205_749952543

🍕BMI stands for "Body Mass Index" and it's a [flawed] way of estimating how much body fat you have.

🐳Without going into the nitty gritty, BMI is based purely on your height and weight. And while it can be a *somewhat* decent measure for the general population, the more you lift and build lean muscle, the less accurate it's going to be.

🌵That's why both of these guys - even though they're clearly no where near the same body composition - are essentially marked as "equally obese."

🐙But truth is, I didn't make this post to bash the BMI. That doesn't do much good for you or me or anyone. The reason I made this post is because too many people focus on arbitrary numbers instead of what really matters -- how you look and feel.

🍣Way too many people care entirely too much about what the scale says. Or how high your BMI is. Or what the shitty handheld body fat measure clocks you in at.

🏌🏻‍♀️And the cool part is...it doesn't matter. None of it. Obviously it's not good to be 50% body fat but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying it doesn't matter and no one cares or can tell if you're 17% or 19% bodyfat. What matters -- ALL that matters -- is that you're making progress, moving in the right direction, and are happy with how you look and feel. And don't let any number or measure or tool or article or IG post or person make you think otherwise.

🌵It's been popping up more & more as a big time fat burner and "must have" supplement, so I figured you and I would dive head first into the world of L-Carnitine and take a closer look. You in? Let's go.

🐿Just so you can see how fitness marketing works, if you Google search "benefits of L-Carnitine" (do it now, you'll see) the first article that pops up is a bodybuilding.com piece that says, if you're looking to burn fat, "this is the supplement you need." The article also conveniently links to their own brand of L-Carnitine which you can buy directly from their site.

👨🏻‍🍳If you really dig into the research though, L-Carnitine isn't the miracle supplement it's made out to be. It doesn't magically burn fat (you still need to be in a calorie deficit) and even though it's often touted as a great stimulant, it's consistently outperformed by caffeine (so might as well just have coffee).

🎅🏻There are some benefits (improved sperm quality, improved insulin sensitivity, and possibly reduced muscle soreness), but much of the data is far from conclusive and, more importantly, you can get L-Carnitine from whole food sources like seafood, chicken, pork, red meat, and dairy. So unless you prefer to spend extra cash on the supplement, might as well just eat it.

🐥Is supplementing with L-Carnitine bad for you? No. And if you want to, go for it. But as of right now the research points to it being more or less redundant so long as you get it from whole foods.
