Explore markryden's Instagram The ancient palace of Knossos on the island of Crete with all its beautiful relics vividly displays a thriving civilization that lived in harmony with nature thousands of years ago (1700-1400 BCE) To me, or anyone looking with a sensitive eye, the society in this enchanted place was obviously a matriarchy, where women held a higher place than men and the leader was a high priestess. It's logical the Greeks would project their patriarchal mythology upon this place that thrived 1000 years before them, and for the same reason Arthur Evans, the British archeologist would think he found the palace of King Minos when he began to unearth the site in 1900. 1605826468057781675_4032773

Explore markryden's Instagram I appreciate everyone’s thoughtful comments to my last post of the Athens Meat Market. I thought it would be appropriate to share my thoughts on the subject.
My choice of meat as a subject in my art stems from a spiritual pondering. I think about the fact that we are made of meat, that it is the physical substance that keeps our spirits in this realm. We all wear a dress of meat. As someone in the previous comments pointed out, under our skin we are no different from the carcasses hanging in the meat market. In a place like this meat market, you know you are getting a piece of an animal, which is very different from the United States, where the plastic wrapped packages of meat are so far removed from the animal it came from.

With regard to consuming animals as meat, my own feelings on the subject have been evolving. I am slowly working my way towards a vegetarian diet. I used to go by the thought that if an animal was treated well while it was alive, it wasn’t wrong to eat it. I think the consumption of an animal that lived a tortured life is particularly awful. I used to eat organic or free range with the hope that I was eating happy animals. But lately I find that I don’t want to eat animals at all. We don’t eat dogs, cats, or horses. I have been adding more animals to that category. I haven’t eaten pigs for many years. This year I decided to stop eating cows. As a passionate meat eater for my entire life, this is a struggle for me, but it’s something I want to do. Maybe I have been affected by vegan friends, like @moby daily posts of happy beautiful cows. Eventually I will try to stop eating chicken. I’m not sure if I will ever be able to eliminate fish.

Very importantly, the meat industry is one of the worst culprits in the harm human beings are inflicting upon the Earth. I care about our beautiful planet, and don’t want to to contribute to that. 1603543642876818123_4032773
